Cheruiyot Wins Joe Piane Invitational

South Bend, Ind.Linda Cheruiyot finished first at the Joe Piane Invitational in the women's gold division 5K race on Friday.
 
The junior clocked in a personal-best time of 16:51.54, claiming her first individual title. The women's team took three of the top-four spots in the gold division leaderboard.
 
"I am proud of both the men's and women's performances today," said UTEP head coach Paul Ereng. "I want to commend everybody for their personal efforts. There were some encouraging performances on both teams."
 
Winny Koech crossed the finish line second with a time of 16:53.25, while sophomore Carolyne Chepkosgei notched a fourth-place finish with a time of 17:08.36.
 
The women's team finished ninth overall and was without senior Lilian Koech.
 
On the men's side, three Miners finished in the top five. The squad was led by freshman Boaz Ronoh, who took third with a personal best of 24:37.18 in the five-mile race.
 
Teammate Cornelius Kapel finished closely behind with a time of 24:40.17. Freshman Rodgers Korir posted another stellar performance, notching a time of 24:40.79.
 
The Miners will return to action on October 13 at the Santa Clara Bronco Invitational in Sunnyvale, Calif.
