UTEP Men’s Golf Completes Shortened First Day at Lone Star Invitational

SAN ANTONIO, Texas –
The UTEP men's golf team teed off its 2018-19 season at the Lone Star Invitational on a rainy Monday afternoon. After the shotgun start time of 8 a.m. CT, heavy rain delayed play for four hours. When play did resume, the Miners ended the first day shooting 313 (+25) and ranking tied for 13th at the TPC San Antonio Oaks Course (Par 72, 7,435 yards).
 
The first day of competition was reduced to 18 holes due to the heavy showers. The 15 programs will play only 36 holes during the two-day event as the final 18 holes on will be played on Tuesday (8 a.m. CT shotgun start) to complete the tournament.
 
Host school UTSA leads the pack after firing a 289 (+1). Arkansas State (291), Little Rock (295), Sam Houston State (296) and Texas State (297) round out the top five. UTSA's Sean Meehan leads the individual field after firing a 68 (-4). Arkansas State's Zan Kuka Stirn (-2) and Joel Wendin (-1), and Louisiana's Charlie Flynn (-1) are the other three golfers shooting under par after day one.
 
UTEP sophomore Santiago Castilla shot a 77 (+5) to lead the Miners and ranking tied for 42nd after 18 holes. Ben Getman, Settavut Paradee and Oskar Ambrosius (participating as an individual) are each ranked tied for 49th after shooting a 78, while Eduardo Gonzalez and true freshman Marcus Khaw are ranked tied for 68th after posting an 80.
 
Castilla registered four birdies on the day, tying for fifth with nine other golfers. He birdied holes two (par 5), four (par 4), 11 (par 4) and 16 (par 3). Getman got off to a slow start, shooting a 41 (+5) on the front nine, but fired a 37 on the back after recording a pair of birdies.
 
Khaw saw his first collegiate action, shooting a 38 on the front nine, but a 42 on the back. However, he birded hole no. 14 (par 5), the first birdy of his young collegiate career.
