EL PASO, Texas – Kathleen Percegona
(Centro Universitario Estacio) will join the UTEP tennis team as a transfer and will be eligible to compete in the 2019 dual-match season, UTEP head coach Ivan Fernandez
announced Friday. She will have four years of eligibility with the Miners.
"I first began speaking with Kathleen over the summer," Fernandez said. "At the time we did not have any scholarships available, but I knew that she was an extremely strong and experienced player. She was planning on transferring to UTEP in August of 2019 but when we got the opportunity to bring her in (for) January of 2019 we had to jump at it. Her maturity and experience will help this young team and we look for great things in her career here at UTEP."
Percegona, a native of Curitiba, Paraná, Brazil, has been ranked as the top player in the country when she was competing in both the U16 and U18 age brackets. In 2017 she won eight separate tournaments in Brazil, maintaining the No. 1 ranking in the country throughout the year.
The 5'6 player has experience competing at International Tennis Federation (ITF) events, winning a doubles championship and being a finalist in doubles on another occasion. She has been a standout player for years, taking home 10 titles throughout Brazil in 2014.
Percegona chose UTEP because she really likes the structure that the university offers her, both for tennis and with her academics. She believes the structure will help her achieve her goals. She also had a good connection with the Miner coaching staff, which made her very confident in her decision.
Percegona and the rest of the Miners will open up the dual-match portion of the schedule at home against Western New Mexico on Jan. 26, 2019.
